The Fisher is a North American marten, a medium sized mustelid. Despite its name, this animal seldom eats fish. The name may originate from the French word fichet, which referred to the pelt of a European polecat.

Fishers have few predators aside from humans. They have been trapped since the 18th century for their fur. Their pelts were in such demand that they were extirpated from several parts of the United States in the early part of the 20th century.
